Planning Your Coastal Walk: Four Essential Steps

A simple framework for preparing before you head out to any Irish cliff path. Taking time with these steps makes the difference between a good walk and a great one.

1

Check Weather & Tides

Irish coastal weather changes quickly. Always check forecasts 24 hours before you go. High winds make cliff-edge walking dangerous. Tides matter too — some areas become impassable at high tide. A few minutes of research keeps you safe.

2

Wear Proper Footwear & Clothing

Trails are wet and muddy even when it hasn't rained recently. Waterproof walking boots with good grip are essential. Layer your clothing — you'll warm up as you walk, and you might need to shed a layer. Bring a windproof jacket regardless of forecast.

3

Plan Your Distance & Pacing

Don't overestimate how far you'll walk. Coastal paths are slower than flat terrain. A mile on a cliff walk takes longer than a mile in town. Plan to walk less than you think you can. Stop when you're at 60% of your energy, not 100%.

4

Bring Water, Snacks & Tell Someone

Dehydration happens fast in wind. Bring more water than you think you'll need. Pack high-energy snacks — nuts, chocolate, fruit. Tell someone where you're going and when you'll be back. It's not about fear. It's just common sense.
